Bourgas
Bourgas
is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria and is surrounded by three large lakes
with all sorts of protected wildlife living there. It is situated in the South
Eastern part of the country and is about 35 kms or about half an hour by road
to St Vlas. It is not a beach resort as such although there are beaches but
they are not really commercialised. Just head for the Sea Garden and the beach
is just beyond. It is also the largest sea port in the country and the ships
you might see anchored in the bay, seemingly for days on end, are just waiting
their turn to come into port to be offloaded. Bourgas airport is slightly north
of the city so you won't pass through the city when travelling from the airport
to Sunny Beach or St Vlas.
If it's a
bit of shopping you fancy, the city has a good cross-section of designer shops
and plenty of others selling local wares. Like most cities you will need to
have your wits about you as you walk around - keep your purse/wallet firmly
under your control and don't make it easy for the pickpockets. And don't give
any money to the "poor" children begging for money because as soon as you give
to one, his/her friend will be along in a minute. Larger stores like Metro,
Technopolis or Technomart to name a few are sited out of town much like ASDA,
Dixon's or Currys are in the UK. But hey, your on holiday so why would you want
to go to ASDA..?
When
you've shopped till you've dropped, the best sport of all is to get yourself a
good spot at one of the very many sidewalk cafes that line the shopping streets
and just watch the world go by over lunch or a beer or G & T perhaps.
Bulgaria
is not long out of the grip of communism but to see the smartly dressed and
sophisticated young women walk by, you would hardly think so. And not many fat
ones in sight either
!! McDonalds and the like are present in Bulgaria but
in small numbers at the moment
.so get there soon before they begin to
fill out. |
